NEWBIE - Day 22 - 22 chicks of the 38 eggs so far!

We have 3 chicks so far! and maybe out 8 more eggs with pips and some zipping going! We have a total of 38 in there. Our eggs are really really dark so when I candled them before lockdown it was difficult to see if there was movement in there...there were definitely chicks taking up most of the egg in the 38 out of the 48 i kept.

One of the chicks looks like it has a dried up gray mass stuck to it along a little string....maybe an umbilical cord to the dried up yolk or something? It's getting around just fine and hopping along the eggs like the other two...is this ok?

Goo and poo. It should pull off.

It eventually fell off and some others had it as well.

Update!

This evening will be the end of day 22. We had 15 hatch yesterday, and 5 more hatch overnight/this morning. 2 more are actively hatching right now. So 22 chicks so far!!

I had started with 48 eggs, 7 were not fertilized, 3 stopped developing, so 38 left. Some of our eggs are really dark so I kept all the ones that dark large masses inside of them even though I couldn't tell if all of them are moving.

At one point is it safe to recandle an egg? I have read that some can hatch as late as day 25! I can try putting my candler up against it but I see better when I hold it upright. I don't want to pull an egg out the incubator to candle it too soon if that would end up damaging it.

I candle all the way through hatch until everyone is at least pipped...lol I remove shells as they hatch and I pull chicks out to go into the brooder as they become active. I am a hands on hatcher. Candling during hatch doesn't compromise the egg. But, if you open the incubator during hatch you do need to make sure to keep the humidity up. I use clean wet sponges in my bator so when I am messing around in there I can just grab one rewet it and stick it back in to keep humidity up if it goes down to 65%. I hatch at about 75%

Hands off hatchers will tell you not to touch them until everyone else has hatched. It's a matter of philosophy. What's comfortable for you.
