Hey all! I'm very new to the duck world. I have 2 Indian Runners who are just over 3 months old.

Here's my question: Do I need to do anything for my ducks during a thunderstorm? Obviously it's instinct in the wild for ducks to find shelter when they need it, so I'm assuming it's the same? I have a deck that they go under for shade and they have their house outside that they could go in too.

When it rains, I put their food just under the deck so it doesn't get all washed out.

There hasn't been tornado warnings yet since I've had them, but my plan is to bring them in the garage where I have a temporary pen set up for times like that.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

My ducks stand out in the rain even when it's thundering an lightening they look like lawn ornaments. But if a tornado warning was issued I would dif get them int a secure building just like i would do for my own family. So you are on the right track. As long as you give them options for getting out of the weather in the TS then your your about all you can. At 12 weeks old and being only 2 you could move them to drier quarters when it rains if you'd like to.

Welcome to BYC

We had a tornado warning last week and I made the ducks go in... They rioted the whole way. My ducks love rain and storms, it's their favorite time to play outside. They have shelter available, but they want to get in the puddles, get all the bugs that are coming up, etc. Silly ducks!

I don't think I have ever seen my ducks try and find shelter from a storm, now if it's snowing they will get up under things but never go inside. They just love being ducks

Glad I found this thread! We've got thunderstorms forecast here for the next 6 days! So I left my 5 week old ducklings in the brooder today when I left for work. :( Usually they're in their outdoor pen during the day, which has a Little Tykes Playhouse with straw in it for shelter. Should they be ok outside in their pen during a thunderstorm? I just didn't want any of them to completely freak out and hurt themselves....
