Newbie, first hatch, pipping then nothing

Do homemade incubators really work? never had time to try to make one... I'm interested because people say they work just as good if not better that a store bought one!

Well, day 21 is passing and no signs of life from my eggs. i even downloaded a 10 second sound clip of baby chicks chirping and copied it 300 times to make a cd to play and encourage them - but nothing.

This is a little disappointing. The only thrill so far has been my day-long focus on that speck of dust i thought was a pip.

i thought yesterday i heard chirping from inside the incubator, but now thinking it was probably a bird outside the window.

i have another batch of eggs in an incubator a week behind these eggs. Maybe somebody is in there?

Sorry about the " Step away from the Bator" remark, it is what we are always told on BYC EZ board when we get to worried about nothing happening in the incubator. I know what you mean, I spend way to much time watching then wondering if it was movement or just my eyes blinking, or did I accidently bump the incubator.

They always seem to hatch for me at night so when you wake up you may see some babies. At any rate, Don't give up and leave the eggs in there for at least 24 days. Low temps early on can cause a delay. These thermometers we get are not always accurate.

Also, I have a Brower Top Hatch and I rarely see movement and peeping is not always a sign either. I don't know why some seem to peep more than others.

Step Away From the Bator was proper advice --
It doesn't mean you can't look in the windows it means do not open- everytime you open the humidity changes - so the shell changes ---

we say step away to resist the urge to lift the lid and help or mess with things cuz it is just so hard not to---

i took the "step away from the bator" comment the way it was intended. Need to resist the urge to get in there and tap them out of their little shells myself.

i really appreciate all the advice, as this is my first time. i think my temps may have been low the first week before i got a flukers digital thermometer/hygrometer. i had been using that teeny hard-to-read one that came with the incubator. Hopefully my kids are just late.

So, is the general consensus that after day 24 it is time to turn off the incubator and give up on this batch?

Did you read the recent post about the guy/gal who gave up and shut it off and one hatched after all? I wish i knew which thread it was under but i dont.

Day 23 - Okay, i don't want to get all worked up, but i think maybe i see a tiny pip happening on one of my eggs. Either that or it's another piece of dust.
