Newbie/ Florida Needs Coop Advice!!! :D

@Rhubarb

Yeah, we used a modified version of the garden coop plan. The hen-house was too well insulated for south GA so we reinvented the wheel. We ultimately decided on the style you see in that pic. We can't have our babies cooking in their house.

That`s about what I was saying. I`m not a fan of raised floors, so I would have the coop all the way to the ground and use dirt for a floor. I had some left over plastic latice panels that I cut to 2 X 8 ft and put them under the sides of my pens with 1 ft in and 1 ft out. That precluded predators digging in and chickens scratching holes next to the wire. I think one side of the coop being open is plenty, but don`t use metal for a roof as it`s too hot. I suppose insulation in the roof could overcome that, something like that shiney sheet stuff. Windows have their merrit as do vents, but afternoon thunderstorms create a problem if ya gotta close them up. That thought makes the dirt floor very appealing as long as it drains well. Might even be nice to have a full sized door in the coop area, as well as in the run. All the pics that have been posted look great. I`m just responding to the design you mentioned. No matter what you decide, I`m sure hindsight will rear it`s ugly head and you`ll wish you had done something different. This thread will cut that to a minimum. Good luck..........Pop
