I have been to this site several times for valuable information. I love Backyard Chickens! Thank you all for being here!
But what brings me in today are MITES! UGH! I know, old topic. But as i sit here (and feel itchy) and read about remedies, I am more confused than ever...I am having seconds thoughts about having fresh eggs...but I love my small backyard flocks; Bantams: Rhode Island Reds, a new breed I have had for only 6 months, and my Bantam Welsummers that I have had for 5 years now. I really love the character of the Welsummers! They have provided hours of backyard entertainment! But is the MITE problem worth it??

Well as far as I know people keep their children even if they have lice and have to be treated. Chickens give you eggs and sometimes dinner. Seems worth the trouble.

Have you checked out the Learning Center for information on mites? And you can also ask questions about that issue on the predator & pest forum. Here are a couple links that might yield some good info for you:

As for the question is having chickens that get pests worth it, that's a question you'll have to decide for yourself. It's really no different than if you have a family dog or cat and it gets fleas, do you get rid of the pet or the fleas? Speaking only for myself, the pluses outweigh the minuses to keeping chickens. I can't think of any living creature that won't have some unpleasant issue to deal with.

Good luck to you!
