Hi all, I'm new to this site, I was researching keeping a small flock in my garden and came across it. After trying to persuade my hubby to have some chickens for over a year, he's now given me the go ahead. However, now I'm talking myself out of it. Am I just romancing the idea of it? Can I keep up with all the cleaning, the noise, smell?? I'm only wanting 3-4 chickens and have a large enough space but not sure now :-/ advice please xx

Hi and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan

Given some planning and the right setup, chickens are actually very little work - and very enjoyable! Plan ahead for things like ease of cleaning, proper food and water placement, and large enough facilities for the number of birds you want to keep.

! Great to have you aboard! I think you should go for it. There are quieter breeds....the smell is minimal with little work if done right. Many folks clean their coops only once or twice a year by using something called the deep litter method...it's not overly smelly. I believe the benefits of chicken keeping far outweighs the work involved. Good luck to you!

Welcome from the UK.

I think you should go for it. I started out with six hens three years ago and now have twenty six hens and six bantams.

Chickens are not that much work and as mentioned earlier with the right set-up they do not cleaning out every week.

They are funny, the eggs are wonderful and you will find yourself laughing at their antics on a regular basis.

Ah thanks everyone for all ur kind and welcoming comments. I think I'm going to go for it, it's been something I've wanted to do for so long and have researched it so much, so it's not a fleeting phase. I will keep u updated with my progress x

Hello and welcome....so glad you joined BYC

You are making the right decision. I bet you will be sorry you didnt get chickens long before now. You will love them. Best of luck to you

So my coop is built (yippee) today we will be building the enclosure. Just after some practical advice re feeding/water bottles. Should they be hanging? I'm keen in the eglo grub and glug but they seem pretty expensive. Will the cost be worth it? Or should I just buy the cheaper ones a d risk them being knocked over constantly?
