(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

We've just begun with our first chicks this past week. DH grew up with them, on his Granny's ranch (in NM), but we've not had them, ourselves, until now.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

We have 27, at the moment, although we're having some mystery problem (I've perused the topics, and will post for help, shortly!) that's causing some depredation and worry.

(3) What breeds do you have?

We have Dominiques, Welsummers, Black Australorps, Rhode Island Reds, one Buff Orpington, and two random quail. (The kids fell in love with those two, in particular, and the breeder couldn't resist the big-eyed, gentle children. I'm in all kinds of trouble!)

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?

My DH had found it while he was doing his end of the research, and I stole his notes.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

Many and varied - cooking (and eating!), home and land rehabbing/renovation, reading, shooting, woodworking, learning, and spending time with family and friends.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

My DH is the one who puts up with my painfully non-engineerish way of doing things by checking quietly over my shoulder occasionally (though he brings coffee, so I don't mind too much) to make sure I haven't missed important structural points. He's wonderful, funny, brilliant, and, thankfully, patient. He also keeps the whole thing from falling down around our ears.

We have five children (intended on having only two, but, this is what happens when procrastinators marry) - and, if the home videos are any indication, we live in a very loud home. But it's a Good Loud, and it's a lot of fun. The kids range from benignly tolerant of our plans and projects, to wildly enthusiastic about any old endeavor, but they're all good sports, and I think they'll look back on their childhoods and say, "Hey, that was pretty good, and we learned a lot, too!"

Pets, we have two: Buddy (a Christmas dog), he's a moose of a mutt and one of those truly Good Dogs that are worth their weight in gold; Sally (a stray that showed up, half starved at the peak of winter cold), she's a min-pin and a good companion for Buddy, but she doesn't listen for squat.

We've been here about five years, and are just getting settled. The first four and a half were spent gutting and renovating the house, and cleaning up the land that we bought. This last year, we've been able to look around and get our bearings in the area.

And now, we have chickens!

Hey! I'm originally from AZ. I miss (and I can't believe I'm saying this) "the dry heat"!!
