Hello, so i'm obviously new. Never had chickens before but i'm focusing on living more on grid and nonconforming to the usual. I really am bad at gardening but i thibk im getting better. I have been researching coops and breeds of chickens for awhile. Thank goodness i married a countryboy. So he is building the coop for me, if left to me those poor chicks would rebel. Since we live in the land of the sun we are completely roofing the coop and run and adding shade cloth on part of the run. So i decided with Buff Orpingtons 5, Barred Plymouth Rocks 5 & Golden Laced Wyandottes 5.. im so excited. Does anyone band them when their babies or do you wait for them to get older?

Great to have you with us! I don't band my chickens at all but I think that if you band them when they are young you have to change them often. So you might want to wait until they are older.

Hopefully someone with experience banding will answer your question better than I can. Enjoy your time here!

Hi and welcome to BYC - glad that you have joined us. I did band some of my adult birds, but after the rains, they get so dirty that its impossible to tell which colour is which. With relatively few of each breed, you will get to know which bird is which, by sight.

You'll find lots of info in the Learning Centre
