Newbie from Burbank, CA 91505

Hi all,
just wanted to say hello since I am new here. I live in Burbank and would love to raise 2 to 4 hens in the near future as pets and of course eat their eggs when they lay them.
I do not want a rooster, just hens. Anyone know of a place near Burbank, CA that raises chickens so that I may purchase a couple?

How do you know if a chick is going to be a rooster or a hen? Luck of the draw?

Hello! I am just over the hill from you and have 5 hens. Do you know what breed/breeds you are interested in? I might be able to point you in the direction of some local breeders. Some breeds are really easy to sex and you can buy young sexed chicks others are much harder and it is more luck of the draw. If you are concerned you can buy point of lay pullets where the gender is known rather than very young chicks. You can always find some breeder that, for a fee, will let you trade in chicks that grow up to be roosters.
