Thank you all so much for your warm welcomes! I feel right at home.
We went to the local feed store Thursday and came home with four chicks which I fervently hope are all girls. They are under a lizard lamp, eating chick starter. They are growing amazingly fast. We just love them! I haven't stopped smiling since they came.
I have:
1 Rhode Island Red. (The feed store only had one.)
2 Ameraucanas
1 "Sex link" (A cute yellow chick with stripes. The feed store owner was very enthusiastic about this type of chicken.)
We named them Ruby, Rhonda, Rita and Flo.
Now we are turning our attention to the coop. I'm thinking a metal storage shed would be a good choice, with some ventilation added. We live in a very moderate climate (Central coast California) where it never gets very hot or very cold. It's almost always 65 degree here, it seems. I am planning to let the hens roam around our well-fenced back yard by day.
Anyway.... nice to meet you all!
