Hi there

My name is Kevin and I live in tarrys b.c. Canada. my family and I just moved to home that has an old coop that has not been used in almost twenty years. Our landlord told us that if we wanted to use the coop for chickens to go for it so it became my new project. The coop is about 14'x10' and has a large roost 10'x6' and eight nesting boxes that were about 12" off the ground (I took them out) it is an open air design and has five windows along the south east side. It had no door when we got here so I built a door out of some old lumber and cedar fencing that was laying around the property, I'm quite proud of it lol. I also decided it needed a run so I built a 18'x14' run/pen. After building the door and the run I started looking at other peoples coop plans and decided I want to renovate the inside of the coop now too. I tore out the old nesting boxes and I am thinking of installing some new boxes that can be accessed from the outside of the coop. with the removal and relocation of the boxes I will also have room for a section of the coop to be used for brooding/quarantine in the future. I am wondering if there are any cons to having boxes that I can access from the outside or if they are just better if you can build them that way? I was still thinking of having eight boxes but stacking them four wide and two high is this a good Idea?

The coop sounds wonderful. All of my coops have external nesting boxes and I love them. Sectioning off a space for broodies is a great idea, but look for a quarantine spot as far away from your main flock as possible. Wouldn't do much good to quarantine in the same coop.

Welcome to BYC!

A lot of folks build external nest boxes. Great way to get to the eggs without having to tromp through chicken poo

Gives you a little more room in the coop itself too.

An internal brooder is ok, but I agree with AZBootsie, a quarantine area in the same coop defeats the purpose.

Hello and welcome to BYC! I'm not sure about the nest box issue. I'm new to raising chickens and we just got our first egg two days ago. Good luck!
