well I have pretty good carpentry skills and i think I like the look and Idea of them I am also a roofer by trade so I think I should be able to figure out the water tight issue. Thank you for all the welcoming words and insight everyone!

I don't know of any down side to accessing nest boxes on the out side, there are just pluses. All my coops the boxes can be accessed from outside.

Welcome from a fellow Canadian and chicken newbie! We are in the process of building our chicken house now. The next boxes will be inside the coop, off the floor but with an outside door to allow access from the back side of the boxes. Have seen pictures of a few coops built this way and it seems like a good idea. Do you know what breed of chickens you will get? We got Sussex speckled and Silver Laced Wyandottes because we wanted dual purpose, quiet, friendly birds. Absolutley love the Sussex! Best of luck.
