Hi all,
It seems like forever that I have been lurking here. The 'lurk' wasn't intentionally that, just every time I went to post I would see something else I had a question about, start reading, searching for more and....well you know the story!
Thanks so much to the people who so generously provide help, info and their tips here. The idea of having baby chicks was intimidating but any time I had a question there was an answer here on BYC.
We bought 6 day old chicks on March 9. They were supposed to be Mixed Heavy Breed layers.
All survived early chick-hood and 3 of our children helped me take care of them which gave them a lot of responsibility and education.
We have experienced
and all the rest that goes with raising chicks.
We made some mistakes, learned from them but made many less than we would have if we hadn't had BYC.
Thanks again to the helpful people here. It is exciting to realize that now that things have slowed down possibly I will have time to participate here in the forums where I feel like I already know some of you.

We have experienced
- 'the escape artist' Suzy,
- the 'gate didn't get closed and something carried me away Peepers',
- the ugly black pullet that has developed into a beautiful, shiny ROO,
- the 'are you sure burying chicken wire isn't a lil overkill??,
- the raccoon who was determined to find food 24x7 in our chicken pen,
- the raccoon or possum that devoured the extra food we thought was secure
- the "this 10 pounder sure looks like a cornish cross",
- the 'they already need water AGAIN?'
- the "I can not believe we figured out how to build a coop",
and all the rest that goes with raising chicks.
We made some mistakes, learned from them but made many less than we would have if we hadn't had BYC.
