Hello! Wanted to introduce myself to the community.

My wife and I are transplants from the Seattle area (her folks are here in KY, wanted to reconnect before they pass). We are just getting started with our 40 acre farmstead. We currently have 6 guineas, plus several house pets. I'm in the process of converting an old shed into a coop for future chickens. I'm confident that the BYC community will be an invaluable tool in giving us a head start on our journey toward healthier eggs and meat!

Thanks for the welcome!

We couldn't have dreamed of a more suitable property! About 4 acres cleared, the rest is heavily wooded with lots of deer and turkey. No sign of coyote or opossum...but have seen raccoon sign and heard owls. We have three ponds...the larger one I just stocked with crappie and bass, the middle sized one is reserved for future ducks, and the smallest one is no more than a frog puddle - gonna try growing rice in it.

It came with 10 outbuildings, including a slaughterhouse/store right down at the gate. Pretty excited about the possibilities!!

My first choice for chickens is Black Australorp, second choice is Barred Rock. I haven't raised chickens since I was a kid, and frankly my parents took care of most of that. Planning to begin with pullets or laying hens...if I can find any!

! Great to have you aboard! Lots of folks are on the very same path as you - greater self-sufficiency and healthier food. Good luck and have fun!
