Hi, I've been learning from this site for about a year and a half. My husband and I just bought a new house six months ago and we made sure while we were looking, we bought one in a location that allows chickens. Since we learned that our area allows chickens and our realator said it's okay (apparently her brother has chickens too, just no roosters allowed, yet I hear one everyday...but we just want the eggs), we bought a nice three bedroom stone house on two acres so we can start raising chickens and gardening. We've always had a love of gardening but always wanted to raise chickens and ducks. So since we've been here six months, we've been renovating our new house and also working the land. The previous owners never took care of it and now we are preparing a nice area for a hen house. My husband and I are great at building things, so my hubby wants to make a chicken coop were we can walk inside in order to sweep it out because he says if it's too small, it will be a pain to clean out, especially with his back problems, so it's easier to push a broom than reach inside with a dust pan and brush.

We want to raise buff orphintons, they say they are gentle and good in cold climates. I look forward to learning from all of you and using your advice.

Hi and welcome to BYC - great that you have joined us and congrats on the new house.

Here’s a link to the Articles section - https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/ There you’ll find lots of information on almost every aspect of keeping chickens - from coop building ideas, to incubating eggs.

There’s a link on the page above to the Learning Centre - it’s a great resource. If you have a specific topic in mind, just type it in the search box - there's a wealth of information on past and present threads.

Each week, various topics are discussed, which can also be a great resource - https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/topic-of-the-week-thread-archive

You may wish to consider joining your state thread as it will put you in touch with other BYC members in your area - http://www.backyardchickens.com/t/270925/find-your-states-thread#post_3239224

All the best

Welcome to Backyard chickens. Generally, chickens can handle cold much better than heat. Buff Orpingtons aren't the best layers but, the hens tend to go broody from time to time.

Broody means they want to sit on and hatch eggs. If you have a rooster you will have fertile eggs. If not you can buy fertile eggs of any breed and exchange them for any infertile ones under a broody hen. They will raise them as their own.

Welcome :frow
I've no clue where Mt. Savage is; sounds like Allegheny or Garrett Co. I'm in Frederick Co., half hr. south of Gettysburg, PA. I'm expert only at getting in trouble, but if you need anything, you know where to find me. If I can't help you, I should be able to find you someone who can.

:welcome

Your new place sounds lovely, enjoy!

Hi, thank you all for the warm wishes. Yes Kwhites634, I live in Allegany County Md. I moved here from Allentown Pa. We really wanted to move out of the city, we ended up moving to a rural location. What is awesome is that it's a nice dark sky location where you can see the milkyway on a nice clear night.

Thank you for the link about Buff Orphintons, N F C.

Pork Pie Ken, great post about the info. That helps a lot. I've been clicking on the links and learning more.

Drumstick Diva, thanks for the indepth info about Buff Orphintons, I love how informed the members here are. I plan on buying chicks next March/April after I build the coop. We have a perfect spot that used to be used as a spot for a firepit, but we removed over a 1,000 pounds of rocks and boulders and removed the ashes and dirt just in case because it's on a nice level clear patch. I'll talk and post a pic before putting a coop there just in case. Why do all of that hard work just to only move it later?

Thank you KikisGirls for the youtube vid of this site, that really helped. I learned alot more about those tabs.

Hi RodNTN, nice to meet you too.

Hi rjohn39, I'm thrilled to finally join here too.

It's great to meet all of you people.
