Welcome to BYC! Don't have a ton of experience with chickens but our Plymouth Barred Rock is very tolerant of the attentions of my 3 y.o. son who just loves her. The rest of the crew (australorp, gold laced wyandotte, and java) are not so interested in being the focus of his affection. Our Rhode Island Red last year was also very good (although we lost her to a raccoon at about 4 months before she started laying so didn't have her to "adulthood"). Sounds like you have plenty to keep you busy - good luck with the impending "final installment."
