Good Morning everyone..My name is Roe and I'm from New Hampshire ..I just joined your site and love all the information out there that everyone gives. Hello Roe and welcome to BYC!

Wow, you have a lot more patience than I do...waiting til next spring for your chickens!! :-)

You might like to stop by our learning center. Lots of good articles on building the coop, raising the babies, keeping your adult flock happy, healthy and safe from predators....

Lots of friendly breeds out there that are also great layers as well. I am fond of the Orpingtons...Buff Orpingtons and the Black Australorps. Both of these breeds are very friend and docile. They make wonderful pets, they are hardy and great layers as well. My Australorps are huge on lap sitting and I can't sit anywhere without a bird begging to sit on my lap!

So take a look at these two breeds pages on the different breeds and their attributes..

And while you are patiently waiting for spring to arrive, LOL, you can do some chatting with your chicken neighbors in your state thread to see how they do things and how they survive your climate...

Enjoy this new journey you are on and welcome to our flock!

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

X2 on what Two Crows said, you are very patient to be waiting!! LOL

I recommend buff orps for a breed to keep. They are friendly, affectionate, lap hogs, great layers, hardy, and curious.

Be sure to check out the learning center. Two Crows has left you with the link.

Good luck planning, feel free to ask any questions and glad you joined!!

Welcome to BYC, you have gotten excellent recommendations. Why not try a variety of the favorites and see how that goes. If you really end up liking one more than others, you can rehome some and buy more of your choice.

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join our flock. You have been given some good advice and good links by the other BYC members. Murray Mcmurray has an excellent "chick selector" tool at http://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/chick_selector.html to help you select the breeds that are best for you. Just be sure to click on "show more characteristics." I would personally suggest that get some Black Australorps for your flock. They are very hardy, calm and gentle, and the best layers of the standard, brown egg laying breeds. My daughter, and now my granddaughter made pets of ours. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. We are here to help in any way we can. Whatever breeds you decide to get, good luck with your flock.
