(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
My husband and I are new to Chickens and I just got my first chicks on 4/14/2020. We started our coop in November of 2017. We hope to have it done in the next 2 weeks!
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I wanted 6, but my husband's boss/friend said we should get 12 - 15 since everything likes chickens and to be prepared for that. I got 12 chicks, but only now have 8. 2 did not look really good after getting them home, but 2 were totally unexpected deaths. This was by day 2, so we are now stable at one week. It changed my excitement.
(3) What breeds do you have?
To the best of my knowledge I have 2-Barrocks; 2-white ones; 2-Rhode Island Reds; 1-Easter Egger; 1-Americana
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I really was excited to start the farm. What's better than having fresh eggs and great compost! I thought once we got them established, it would not be too much extra effort taking care of them. I named them all and they are now pets. They are so entertaining!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Cars and gardening. I love everything plants. I help my husband work on the cars and other equipment to learn. I have no issues with getting my hand dirty.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
My husband and I live on 20 acres in the country with a border collie mix-dog, inside cat, 1 outside cat. Our neighbors were going to give us 9 grown chickens and 2 roosters and we could not get our act together to get the coop going before they needed to get rid of their chickens. I'm kinda glad it worked out this way. We got the babies. If I can keep them alive when they get bigger and go outside, I will be so happy. We have so many wild creatures here, it will be a challenge to build the chicken fortress. I work 45 miles from work, so that takes most of my day, but to come back here to the farm makes it all worthwhile. Now, we have officially gotten started!
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I did a search on the internet a few years ago, to learn about raising and caring for chickens. I wanted to learn as much as possible before getting them. This site came up and all the information was addictive. So much knowledge and variety of people and birds. I wanted to keep reading and learning. When we finally got the girls, I decided to join. Thank you for having me and thank you for all the knowledge.
