My poor Jojo in the picture does have frost bite. He has been in our home since Saturday morning recovering from it. His go caught under a saw horse in the coop and I found him with a severely frozen foot and frost bitten comb. His leg is making a full recovery, no black, some blisters and swelling. Had a a few Epsom salt baths and wound spray to help him recover.

I'm sorry your boy got such a bad case of frostbite. I'm glad his foot is getting better. All the black on his comb will eventually fall off. Don't mess with it or touch it at all. Just watch it for signs of infection.

Does your coop have lots of ventilation and stay nice and dry at night?

It does, I didn't know how he got it so bad till I was watching him in the house and half of the comb falls in the water when he drinks from it. So that explains what happened for the accelerated frost bite.

Have you heard of the nipple waterers? We've got a 5-gallon DYI in the coop and two 2-gallon store-bought electric heated ones for the temp coops. No open water and roosters' combs/wattles can't get wet.

Welcome here chicken lady. I'm glad you joined sorry about your boys comb but so glad his leg is healing. Oh well combs are way overated. My leghorns have lost a few points on theirs every winter. One member up north says his combed chickens all have smooth combs by now.:eek:
I agree chickens are very relaxing. Glad you're here.
