Have you heard of the nipple waterers? We've got a 5-gallon DYI in the coop and two 2-gallon store-bought electric heated ones for the temp coops. No open water and roosters' combs/wattles can't get wet.
I was looking at it last night and have it in my Amazon shopping list to get. Thank you for the suggestion!

My poor Jojo in the picture does have frost bite. He has been in our home since Saturday morning recovering from it. His go caught under a saw horse in the coop and I found him with a severely frozen foot and frost bitten comb. His leg is making a full recovery, no black, some blisters and swelling. Had a a few Epsom salt baths and wound spray to help him recover.
You are doing everything right, things happen, don't beat yourself up about it. Epsom salt baths are my go-to for injuries!
