Hello all! I'm Kelly, from upstate South Carolina. I'll be a first time chicken owner in a few weeks. After almost 12 years of marriage, 10 of those being repeatedly asked by my husband for chickens, I gave in
We have some land and have the room for a small flock. Unfortunately, we have the predators that go along with the land as well- cats (6 of our own), dogs, foxes, coyotes, raccoons, hawks, owls. . . I think even squirrels can stir up trouble, but I could be wrong 'bout that. I have an animal science degree from Clemson, but I stuck more to the large animal side of things and took maybe one poultry class, so I am a total newbie. My husband had chickens as a kid- mostly Araucanas, a few others- so it has been a while since he's had them as well. My dream would be for them to be completely free-range, but with our predator population, I don't want it to become the Chicken Buffet for Wildlife, you know? So I guess our coop/fenced-in area will have to do. Anyway, I let the hubs order a few and they should be delivered around July 12. We ordered from MMH and I am hoping all goes ok. I am a bit nervous but getting kind of excited. We have 2 daughters, ages 7 and almost 5, who are very excited to meet the little peepers. We have a brooder and I am researching like crazy about everything else. I'm looking forward to getting to know some chicken enthusiasts here. I've already learned a lot just perusing various threads, and of course I love looking at the beautiful pictures!
