Hello everyone!

I have been thinking about getting 2 hens for my backyard for awhile now and I am ready to take the plunge! I have had baby chicks as a child, but we always returned them to the farm when they grew up. I want to get a pair of hens because I know what wonderfull pets they can make, I love the idea of all that free fertilizer for my garden and I just think reducing the demand for eggs from horrible factories is the responsible thing to do. I am located in Long Beach CA and looked up my local laws and found out that I can have some chickies! So now my next step is to get advice on a coop and varities that thrive in this area. I would love to meet with another local, see your set up and talk chicken. Thanks!

Sue! I'm your northern neighbor here in WA:) I used to live in sunny SoCal when my dad was stationed at Vandenberg AFB--loved it!

The great thing about having chickens too is that you don't need to have a rooster for your hens to lay:) Personally I like having at least one roo--my Buff Orpington cross is such a mellow guy that I don't have to worry about him attacking me. One encounter with spurs was enough for me to know that I never want to experience that again!

Again, welcome, and I'm sure that others will post helpful info for you. Have fun with your new endeavor:)
