Hi I just got my first chickens around the end of march. I thought I was getting 6 hens and a rooster. I ended up with 7 hens and no rooster. I recently got a rooster from a lady and she also gave me a hen, she thought it might help with the introduction. It didn't. My girls are harassing both the new rooster and the hen. The first day we got the new rooster and hen, the rooster would crow. After the first day, the rooster has stopped crowing. I figured it was because he doesn't feel dominant anymore? If that is not the case, why would he stop crowing and do you think he will crow again? Thanks.

By the way, my name is Jennifer and I have learned a lot from BYC. I'm glad I came across this site while on my new journey with my chickens. I love my chickens and wonder why I didn't get them along time ago.

He will crow , is he younger than your flock? He probably feels too threatened now to crow again. Use some wire to partition your run so the newbies can be on one side and your established flock on another. That way they can see each other and get used to the idea without bloodshed. . If this seems to go well, you may be able to allow them to free range together - the newbies would have enough space to get away(hopefully) if they come under attack.

Make sure once they are integrated to have feed and water dishes in another area, so if they are bossed away - they can find food elsewhere. There is quite a pecking order that goes on even when the chickens know each.

Good to know he will crow again. There hasn't been any bloodshed yet. I have noticed that they try to stay on opposite sides. It's weird, it's like high school and they all got their own cliques. Lol. I'm glad that the rooster has his hen though, I would feel really bad if he was stuck by himself. Do you think I need to do the wire petition if they pretty much try to stay away from each other? Sometimes they get around each other and squabble, but not really bad. I just wish they would all get along? Do you think they will ever get along good?

! Pleased to have you aboard! I think drumstick is right - he will crow again once he feels part of the flock. May just take some time for all to get used to each other. Good luck to you!

Thanks everyone. Good news!! My husband got up this morning to go to work and heard crowing in the back yard!!!
