Hello, My name is Kevin. I'm from Eastern Washington state (the Tri Cities). If you're unfamiliar with Washington, this is a portion of the state that is dry. We get a lot more sun than Seattle does, and have a lot less trees. Our house is in the city limits. We are allowed to have up to 5 small animals, hens included. Since we already have a dog and cat, this means we can have three birds.

I've never had chickens before, but have been kicking the idea around for a while now. I like to eat healthy and local, and also do a back yard garden. My wife is less excited about the plan, but is on board if I take care of everything. The kids are pretty stoked too.

I like building things for fun and just built a 6x4 a frame tractor, roughly based on what I've seen here and other places online. I don't have any hens yet, and would love to hear ideas for good breeds for a newbie to try, and also if there are any ways to get reasonably priced pullets this time of year so that we can get eggs soon. :)

Welcome to BYC, I hope you find what you need to know

Hi and :welcome

Awesome that you built your own coop!
You could try sex links. They are good layers, and easy to take care of. We've had sex links for years, and they pretty much take care of themselves in the garden, and don't mind a pat from visitors. :p

from Ohio!

Try checking at farmer's market, or Craigslist for a local source. Do your research for what to look for to get healthy birds. Happy hunting!
