(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
YES! We just bought our small 4 acre farm in March 2018. Our new neighbor very kindly gave me two chickens (1 hen and 1 rooster) when he learned we were headed down that path. I blame him for getting me started so soon!! I got them at the very end of April 2018 so maybe a month after moving!

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I have two...for now...that's about to increase by a lot! Chicken math right?!

(3) What breeds do you have?
Mine are cornish hen mixed with what is assumed to be a leghorn rooster. I'm looking to add more breeds to my flock to include some meat and eggs.

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
Google search offers a lot of information and always ends up leading me to here. So, I decided it was about time I just make an account.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Other than helping run the homestead, I also sew, crochet, play video games, or watch a few TV shows. I love making things and homesteading is like the ultimate making!!

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

My family is my husband Jason and we have two other dogs! They are amazing. We also have two ducklings that I am raising. I do have a full time job as an Education Director for a tutoring company. I have a bachelors in psychology and a master's in education. Next will be my doctorate in innovative education if I get accepted (fingers crossed!!). Hopefully we can make our home care for us!!

Awesome!!
What kind of dogs do you have?
What chicken breeds do you want?

My dogs are a mix (maybe pit/boxer??) and the other is a blue heeler/Australian shepherd mix. She REALLY loves to chase chickens. We think she might be trying to herd them but we aren't sure because she doesn't attack them or hurt them.

I really haven't decided on what breeds of chickens to get. I'm doing so much research and I feel like every time I pick something, there's a different one that's "better". Since dual purpose doesn't seem to be great, I'd like one for laying and one for eating. I also have no idea if I can actually butcher a chicken. I feel like I could but I've also felt guilty before for killing a fly....so...lol. Any recommendations on breeds?

We also have a 4 acre plot. It's desert country here so we have to develop and modify a lot!

I'm new to raising chickens, and I'm loving them. Such cool pets!!

We have 3 kids, 3 17wk old chickens, 7 2-3 week old chicks, and 4 kittens! Our house is full of babies
Oh my gosh that's a lot of babies! One of the strays nearby had kittens (she was VERY pregnant) but I haven't seen them yet. Definitely going to be adopting one or two of them once they start coming around. I love all the animals lol.

I'm taking a goat class soon too, hoping to get my hands on dwarf Nigerian babes next spring
