She needed to be with others and was so happy. But she'd always had access to cayenne pepper with me. And that's good for the heart. So you're right, I feel really guilty
I am sorry you are feeling guilty. You should not, but we cannot help how we feel. Cayenne Pepper may be good for the heart, but it was good for Princess's overall wellbeing to be with a flock again. You did wonderful with her for the period while she was with you alone, and would have continued to do so. 7 years is a long life for a hen. Take comfort in knowing that her twilight year was spent in the company of many other hens and a Turkey. I follow that sanctuaries page. Just a few months ago they had a vet out for overall health checks on their chickens. Think of that, a vet farm call for chickens. Not many of us here can offer that. They could and they did.

When the guilt fades, and it will in time. I hope you did the kindest and most unselfish thing possible for dear Princess by allowing her to go to the sanctuary.

Who knew shrimplets could be as stressful as chicklets! I will go online today and fall down the ‘shrimp rabbit hole’. Seeing as how I won’t have FBA to peruse 🥰
Careful there because it is a rabbit hole. The shrimp are my favorite in the tank. Such active and busy little creatures. Unlike fish they can thrive in smaller tanks. I want a big tank, but I also find myself wanting a smaller tank for my nightstand. A little 3 to 5 gallon tank with only 1 or 2 snails and a huge breeding colony of cherry and ghost shrimp.

I took delivery of a hanging scale like @Ponypoor showed in her video so I am going to start getting weights on everyone over the next few nights.
@Ponypoor - I am sure this is a silly question, but how do you get the chicken in the bag? And more importantly out of the bag?!
I will be doing this at night with my headlamp - only way I can touch anyone really - and normally I get them to stand on my arm from the roost and carry them that way to wherever I am going to treat them or trim them or whatever. I then tuck them under my arm like a football and pin them to my side so they can't flap. I am not quite sure how to get them in a carrier bag without them being upside down!

Stupid question tax: Tassels assembling her crew. That branch is about 4’ off the ground. Only Tassels and Geronimo fly up straight from the ground without using the ladder or the tree stump. Bucky is still outside digging in the leaves.

What a beautiful ladder! You MADE it?

That sounds so lovely by the bedstand💕

Water snails make me chuckle. As a teenager more than 60 yrs ago I bought ONE pretty variagated brown snail for my small aquarium. A week or so later there was a baby snail in the aquarium. I don't remember how many baby snails were produced but they were all over the tank & had to move them out. Snails must be bisexual cuz a while later there were more baby snails from the original snail. It was humorous but annoying at the same time cuz I didn't want to kill the babies!

Only way I stay in contact with people I knew from the past, is well, I’m an investigator for the United States government. Law enforcement division USMS. And my non- retired colleagues
The pen pal was lost when there was upheaval in the family & I had to move to another city away from the farm & all my pets & belongings so all my contact info is gone. Over 80 yrs I'm afraid she may not even be around any more. Let the past alone I feel & just keep the good memories 💕 .

Been meaning to ask everyone - has anyone else noticed the "lip smacking" beak / tongue / mouth when getting snuggles? And before @featherhead007 jumps in, I mean the sound from a chicken!

Both Tedi and Annie do it often, right after getting situated on my lap. I had thought it was a dry mouth needing a drink, like they just ate something, or clearing their mouth in some way. Now I think it's something else, a happy or contented expression. I don't know where, but I saw a reference to happy beak clicking. Is this it, if it's a real thing?
Yes, it's a thing!

My favourite version is when I have brand new chicks - they hate my incubator once they've hatched for some reason, so I always pull them out straight away and keep them in the neck of my top until they're fluffed up and have one or two other to go under the heat plate with. Happy baby beak clicks coming from under your chin is the cutest thing ever.

And unless you’re breeding for showing then size/weight is going to be all over the place.

Just because the breed standards say it should be something doesn’t mean every single one wi be this way.

Most standards will read as a range (ie Roos 7 to 9 lbs), along with what they should look like.

Ok all have a lovely evening, it’s been and eventful day, and I am tired. New septic tank risers and hijacked by crazy chooks!

The trees are slow to turn colour this year

Look at that sky! It didn’t stay sunny though. It’s a thunderstorm out there at the moment - very late in the year for that.
Lovely colors 💕
