Hi and :welcome from Ohio. So glad you joined. You don't need a roo unless you want fertile eggs. My advice on coop building, use screws istead of nails, much easier to take apart when changes are needed. :thumbsup

One question down, Thanks. Undecided about the roosters, morning crowing and all. Rather late risers in this household. Suppose all that will change once the chicks arrive. Also, I am reading that some get mean? Do not want my 3 yr old to get hunted down in his own yard by an ornery rooster. LOL
 
Don't know the number. At first I just wanted enough to get me through a week's worth of eggs. We go thu about dz and a half/week. Now I am seeing how popular fresh eggs are in the community and thinking of selling some to offset cost. Hubby also wants to have some meat chickens, too. So thinking about 6-12. Every time I read something new, my plans change.

Small to medium sized. I live in a residential/rural area. I live on the St. Regis Indian Reservation in upstate NY. My property is fairly large but I do want to put in a garden and about 6 -8 fruit trees. So right now I may have room for a medium size coop, house including a fairly long/large covered run. We do have lots of dogs in the area but I am sure if I dbl fence (either chain link or 4x8 welded link fence with another layer of chicken fence) I can be somewhat assured they would be safe.The four leggeds I can deal with it is the two leggeds that we have problems with. neighborhood kids who were not taught to respect other's property. But that is another chapter. LOL
