I am new to all this, but going to jump in with both feet. My wife and I have a large pen, 2x2 heavy wire; back wall is solid, and 8 ft tin covering the top. The entire top and run is covered with wire. Wire has been buried along the bottom and nesting boxes attached to the back wall. Also have roosting poles in place, only thing missing are the chickens (five red star pullets) will be here soon. My question is that my set-up is more of a pen and does not have a coop, is this ok? They have plenty of room, well protected from predators, and I have electricity close by if any heat lamp is needed. We live in a southern state but there are times when it gets 20 degrees, but hardly ever. Thanks in advance for any advice.

I would add a 3 sided shelter of some sort so they can get out of wind and rain if they want, and to hold warmth when they are very young, if they start out in there. Also for shade; they will need shade in the summer, but will appreciate the breeze.

If you really want it predator proof, you need a smaller gauge wire around the bottom as raccoons will reach through much smaller holes and pull them out piece by piece. Weasels and rats and probably some other things can get through that, too.

Good luck!
