Newbie here hi to you all

Can someone give advice for what to do with a flock that lays in random places and not in coop? Could it be certain breeds that do this? Naughty roosters leading them off? Please advise!

Some people use decoy eggs in the box (like golf balls) to help their girls understand where to lay. Others don't let their flock out until later in the morning so they will use the boxes for lack of other places to lay.

If you can post a picture of your coop that shows their boxes, we may be able to offer other ideas.

All breed hens do this. They do not care what the rooster says (or what you say) they lay where they like. Seriously, put some fake eggs in the nests to tempt them into laying in a more appropriate spot. Keep an eye out for hidden eggs too. They will generally keep laying in out of the way places until you disturb the nests. Also, when they do start laying in a nest, try not to remove eggs while anyone is sitting.

Hiya, and welcome to BYC! :frow

Many new pullets will lay in random places. They eventually catch on and will lay in the nest boxes. It was odd to find one outside in the snow about a month ago. They usually stay on the paths, so whoever that was, was very daring!

Thank you for sharing all of those beautiful pictures!

We're glad you're here!
