I would like 3-5 chickens. People friendly, kid friendly, foraging capability, I live in RI so 4 season sustainable, free range on my 1/2 acre but also coopable. I know nothing about chickens. Fill me in folks! What kind of chickens should I get??

I think it would be best to put the questions to others from your area go " where am I , where are you" thread and post on your state thread. They could give much better advice on what breeds do best in your climate. Also can tell you who has the best chicks, feed stores, etc..

We have Barred Rocks and Astrolorps (sp) and a Guienia Hen.... We live in North Central Washington and we also have 4 seasons and they did well over the winter. Our girls and 1 rooster are a blast to watch. We have had them since they were a day old so they are very friendly. Good luck in your adventure.

Hello from Oregon & welcome to BYC. there are lots of great breeds. Up in the forum/learning center tabs is tons of info. My flock is mixed - leg horns, black copper maran, golden sexlink, barred rock, buff orphington etc. All very nice hand raised hens. Love the variety of eggs too. You should look at different breeds and see what your drawn to. Best of luck :)

! Pleased you joined us! There are as many opinions about the type of birds you should get as there are breeds! You might peruse the chart in the link below - it doesn't list all the breeds there are - but a lot of popular ones. Might help you to do some comparison shopping. Good luck to you!
