Newbie Here - Wheelchair bound

Very interested in what you set up for you and your chickens... Welcome to BYC from Arizona! This is the place to be for all your chicken news, connections to fabulous fowl folks and more!

Look at your route - distance & path type - brick or similar is good, but needs maintained to prevent heaving & eventual unlevel path considering your weather.

Keep daily items within your reach range & strength level. Water weighs alot so maybe multiple small waterers or a hose to fill a container that fills something that stays in one place instead of a big waterer to lift/haul. Consider how you will store & scoop feed.

Make it as easy on yourself as possible... it doesn't have to be perfect to start... we all think of ways to make it better day by day.

IF or when you do need help (and we all need help sometimes)... consider teaming up/mentoring a young church friend, neighbor or 4Her that is interested in chickens or can't have animals themselves. You could get weekly help for heavy cleaning of waterers or other bigger chores and they would get to care for an animal they might otherwise have no exposure to.

CaroleW,
Thank you so very much!!

Welcome to BYC 🙋,

I don't recommend getting a standard coop for your situation. The converted shed idea seems more doable cause you can roll inside to do some cleaning and collect egg at your arm height. Chickens in general are somewhat good fliers so they don't need a ramp to the nest box. They will require a roost to sleep just plan it away from your path.

For the waterer, you can use a 2, 3, 4, 5 gallon plastic bucket with a lid and pipe or hose it from the bucket to your outside facet, the lid keeps it clean. Drill a quarter inch hole on the upper side for the over flow and air exchange. Then you can install water nipples or water cups to the bucket. This method is very practical.

As for the feeder, there's a lot of different ways to make a semi automated feeder to last for a month. You'll need to research the many ideas on here.

Feel free to ask questions. And thank you for joining.
