Grew up in the country having a mom that did wildlife rehabilitation for 50 years, I’ve been around so many animals! I’ve always had 🐕 dogs, an occasional cat 🐈 and birds. My best friend had chickens and I would get the eggs with her every morning. But that’s about all I knew.
we recently in the last two years retired to East Tennessee from the gulf coast area in North Florida and MississippI, with 11 acres and are taking back the land and will be remodeling our forever home.
My daughter and family lived in our home here in TN as we were getting ready to retire and took up the homesteading life and fell in love. When they moved out and we moved in, we acquired their small chicken coop with five hens.
my husband is wanting to build another larger one. We are in love!
of course they miss their chickens and are now living on base as they went back into military living.
so I want to learn everything I can. I have been putting hay in the hen house but don’t have any boxes yet. It is small right now. We are loving the eggs. My plans are to plant herbs around the coop for their health and to give the coop some flare. We let them out most every day to freerange for about an hour every day, I’m working now but will do more as I get free time.

Congratulations on living the good life. Beautiful girls! It must have been quite an adventure growing up with a wildlife rehabber; I bet you have plenty of stories to tell!!

Since your husband wants to build a new coop, please encourage him to use hardware cloth instead of chicken wire to help keep the girls safe in their run. Don't know your predators there, but So Far, none of mine have gotten past the hardware cloth, pricey as it is. Can't say the same for the chicken wire.

Welcome to the group and best wishes for your future!

Hi, congrats on your move to a more rural life where you can have a flock! I too would encourage the use of hardware cloth to protect your chickens.

Thanks for joining us!

Hello and welcome to BYC! So happy you decided to join our community. I'm glad you are doing limited "free ranging." I let my flock out for about an hour everyday, weather permitting, but I stay right with them as there is a high predator population around here.
