Newbie here, in more ways than one! I've been owned by chickens since February of this year and absolutely love it. It has been so much fun. Started out with a few buff orpingtons and wyandotes then hubs ordered 25 rainbow layers and a couple of other kind and ohhhh the freebie turned out to be a white crested black polish. His name is Don for obvious reasons! Well I got my first egg today! It's a small to medium green tinted egg. I have been over joyed!!! Like a kid at Christmas! My co-workers think I'm nuts! Here's a picture of the first one - as a co-worker just said
This is a $500.00 egg
Chicken coop - 200.00
Chickens 50.00
5 months and 250.00 of food
1 egg priceless!

Hi! I'm new here too, and I enjoyed reading your introduction; your enthusiasm is inspiring and infectious!!! I'm still "breed shopping" for pets/layers, and want chickens with friendly temperaments. Have any of yours stood out in this way?

I have loved the buff orpington. My favorite was the male and I named him "escape chicken" because he was always the first one to try to get out of the coop doorway. He would always sit in my lap and sleep after I fed him. But of course, he got eaten! I was home on vacation and had taken to letting the chicks out all day cause they love to roam. The Sunday evening before I went back to work he didn't return home. I then discovered that I was missing about 7 or 8 chickens! My son did a little exploration of the woods behind the pen and lo and behold there were feathers everywhere and we haven't seen the chickens since. Made me very sad.

We purchased the bulk of our brood from McMurray Hatcheries ( are we allowed to say names on here??). The rest have come from one of our local feed stores. For every 25 # bag of feed you buy you get 5 free straight run chicks! I can't turn down something free!!! I have probably given away 50 or so chicks! I currently have around 40 hens and 1 white crested black polish that I call Don and 1 Dominecker roo.
