Newbie here...

I know the question is about roosters & eggs, and the previous answers and opinions on their benefits are excellent. But before you do anything, a big priority should be to make the coop and run predator-proof. Everything in creation likes a chicken dinner.

Don't use chickenwire in the run, use hardware cloth, and take every other precaution against flying and digging predators. Neighbor dogs can also wreak havoc on a flock.

There are too many heartbreaking posts on here telling about predator attacks. Nip that in the bud by making your chicken space predator proof.

Welcome to the joy of chickens! It's better than tv, and most other things.

Welcome to the BYC forum. I kinda know how you feel with moving from city to country living. Only thing was my grandparents who raised me had a farm then I went back home to my parents in a town with alot of people and no land lol.
