Hello!
I have 4 girls. 12 weeks old. Started with week old chicks in a brooder. 1 leghorn, 1 ameraucana, 1 black sexlink, 1 golden sexlink.

My husband and I live in California, outside of Sacramento. This is my first time as a chicken owner. My husband grew up on a farm in upper state NY and had chickens as a boy, so he is the expert. But they are definitely my girls. He built the coop and helps with the heavy stuff, but I do most of the cleaning, feeding, watering, and caring.

I have been reading a lot on this very helpful site. So far in my 12 weeks with my new girls...I LOVE IT! They are so very additive and I find them very relaxing. I guess they get my mind off all the other crap in the world, that I can’t do anything about...if you know what I mean. The grandchildren love them too.
Thanks for all your help!

Chicken keeping can be good therapy. I like to go sit in the coop and chat with my hens when I feel down or stressed. They always cheer me up and relax me.

I grew up on farms, I've always had at least 3-4 dogs at a time (always), inside and outside cats. My brothers had horses, cattle on both grandparents farms, and I had goats but no animal has compared to the true therapy my chickens have brought me. It makes me feel like I'm crazy lol but I keep seeing others saying the same thing on this site so I know I'm not alone! I've suffered from depression for 16yrs now (constant the first 3-4yrs, it just comes and goes now) but my chickens have brought me so much joy. My daughter and I are lucky enough to share a home with my mom and although my mother was less than pleased when I brought home our surprise chicks I think she has let it go because she knows how much happiness they have brought.

Welcome to the site!
