Hi we are a homeschool family who have had our first four hens for 2 months now. Our 12 year old son helped look after a large group of hens at a volunteering project but really wanted his own to look after his own at home. The hens at the project were largely rescue or ex battery and their health was suffering, a baptism of fire for him possibly. Now he has his own newly laying hens hes so happy.
They have been laying for about 4 weeks now. We are learning quickly as a family and loving our new ladies! We are trying to grow our own veg and food for the hens (and us) and be more self sustainable, learning as we go!
We have 2 Columbian blacks, 1 Maran and 1 White Sussex, all named after the tv show Gladiators! We also have a very funny Cockapoo who is adjusting very well to his new job guarding the hens.
We found out about BYC after looking up information and advice online. Sometimes the books just don't tell you what you need, it's been so much help already thank you!
