We have a very small 'farm' in middle Tennessee (7 acres) and are looking at getting some meat chickens and some egg chickens. My husband has a terminal illness and I'm hoping to grow and raise as much of our own food as possible. I know I can't reverse his disease but figure anything I can do to help some will be a good thing!
We raised 21 chickens about six years ago just because we saw the hatchlings and fell in love. We'd planned on getting them for eggs but gave up because we didn't have an area set up for them. Gave them to a local farmer at about four months old. I gave up too soon!!
This time we've got about half an acre set up, just need to raise some fencing along the top of the wall that's out there and move the hen house over and we're set! Hoping to order our chicks in about a month and get a second half acre area set up for the egg chickens closer to the house.
