Hello BYC people,
I'm new to chickens and other poultry. We just moved mid-summer to 18 acres, and we're loving every minute of being out here!
At the moment, we have 5 leghorns in a chicken tractor (each laying every day), 2 RIR and 2 Plymouth Rock striped and 1 blend of something that looks like the RIR but more orange (only the RIR are laying). The 2nd set is in their own chicken tractor. Then we have 4 pheasants, 6 bobwhites, and 24 coturnix. AND I just put 24 coturnix in the incubator. Whew! We're really jumped into this country living.
We have an English Springer Spaniel that dh is training to hunt, so that's why all the game birds. In the meantime, I'm thoroughly enjoying learning how to build the coops, gather the eggs, and the while process.
We began with the RIR and Plymouth Rocks and blend batch. The RIReds have been laying for a month or more, and we can't figure why the other 3 aren't laying yet. THey're quite large, I think they're the same age as the RIRs, but their combs and wattles haven't developed.
Anyway, happy to be here. Hello to all!
