newbie in North Carolina

This Saturday we just bought our first two chickens at a flock swap - a two month old Orpington and a three month old Orpington.

They are eating and drinking well. They are spending most of their time in a corner of the run under the coop. When I walk in the run, they run away from me. I've been bringing them small treats each time, talking gently and moving slowly. I guess I had a romanticized notion they would be a bit friendlier to me and I feeling a little disappointment. How long is their adjustment period? Is there any hope?

Congratulations on your new birds! And yes, there's always hope.

I learned something new earlier today. One of the other members here, I think it was @sourland , explained how chickens, as prey birds, are always nervous when something approaches from above. So many maybe try adjusting you approach? Or at least give 'em a moment to recover after their first reaction.

Greetings and welcome back to BYC! So glad you rejoined us and congrats on your new hens! I know it never happens fast enough but be patient and before long they'll be running up to you as soon as they see you! They are creatures of habit and really hate change. You're probably familiar with chicken little? Just keep visiting with them, bring them nice treats, move slow, talk soft. Bring a chair and book and set with them for a while. They'll come around! Orpingtons are very congenial birds.
