Hi there,
I'm new to the forum, but I've been lurking the site for about two years now- I'm about to pick up hen number two this week, and figured I'd better sign up so I can draw on everyone's experience.
My first hen is a heinz 57- well, I'm quite convinced she's a she... she's only 9 weeks, so I could be wrong still. She was an accident (friends didn't have any broody hens, but turns out the duck sat on it with her eggs) and an accidental acquirement ("oh that's a cute chick, I'll take it home!")
I just finished building the coop... well, it's nearly finished. It's livable, and I learned a TON on BYC about constructing it. It should be done this weekend. Grand total for the building costs (so far) $21.
Hen number 2 is to be picked up this week, and while I live in a town with a "no chicken" bylaw, all my neighbours are in love with my chicken.
Also in the house, a flemish giant rabbit (5 years old) and a French bulldog (9.5 years old). Rabbit loves chicken, chicken loves rabbit, chicken loves dog.... dog loves chick poo.
I'm off to read up on water options, I own a small fish tank water heater- I'm hopeful to find something that might work with that.
looking forward to meeting more of you!
