Thanks for the great site and resources. I am a first timer looking to raise some foul and sheep. Looking for suggestions on breeds and maybe local breeders in the western PA area. Thanks

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join our flock. As far as breeds, it depends on what you are looking for in your chickens. If egg production is a priority, I would recommend Black Sex Links, which are hardy and friendly, egg laying machines. I've raised them for years (along with other breeds and hybrids), and they have been my best layers, consistently churning out more than 300 eggs per hen per year. If you want very friendly, calm, and gentle breeds that are potential lap pets, Australorps, Orpingtons, Cochins, Brahmas, Sussex, and Faverolles all have a well deserved reputation for being very friendly, calm, and gentle (great breeds with children). Australorps are the best layers on this list, and Cochins are the poorest layers (although they are the best brooders and mothers). Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Whatever breeds you decide to get, good luck with your flock.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Michael has left you with some great ideas for breeds. I too am a huge fan of the Black Australorp. Very docile friendly breed and a great layer too. Buff Orps, Plymouth Barred Rocks, Wyandottes and Rhode Island Reds are other great breeds good for meat, eggs and pets.

Good luck and we do welcome you to our flock!

We're glad to have you.

The breed that I would strongly suggest would be the Wyandotte. Mine have been excellent layers of around 250-300 eggs a year. They come in many beautiful colors, for those who wanted a varied color flock. And, they are extremely cold hardy and can withstand below zero temperatures with relative ease. Mine have done fine in the heat as well. My Wyandottes have the best personalities of all my chickens. They are very personable with their own unique personalities.
