Newbie in Rockingham Virginia

It's so weird to me - I moved to rural Virginia from Seattle, where our very dense neighborhood (which bordered downtown) permitted chickens and we used to pass by a coop that was right against the sidewalk. The boys loved watching the chickens on our way to and from the park. Will be odd if it's MORE restrictive in the country!
:welcome :frowI live rural in Florida. I have a few hundred birds. I have friends that have way more birds than are allowed where they live but they have good neighbors. Here the property parcels are each several acres. Some of the neighbors have divided their properties and have sold some of their land and new people are moving in and building new homes. When we first moved here a long time ago we were the last house on our dirt road at the time, but over the years the road was extended and paved and people then had a lot of acreage and divided it and people bought it and many put either mobile homes, manufactured homes or built homes. Personally I would continue with your plan until someone complains then set out to change the ordinances in your area. Good luck and have fun...
