Hi, I have been "lurking" for a bit and decided that this was indeed a GREAT forum. My father raised game chickens when I was young. They ran all over the place. The hens were very aggressive when they had chicks. I didn't pay much attention to them. I just knew to stay away from those hens! Now, many years later, I began raising sheep to train my border collies with ( I compete in sheepdog trials) and then bought some Indian Runner ducks to train with. The ducks were so much fun, PLUS we were getting eggs (very good eating, by-the-way)! Hubby said he always wanted chickens . . . so here we are, raising five babies we bought thru the mail (they are 8 weeks old, all pullets, I hope). Our neighbor gave us a pair: one light brahma hen (great eggs!) and a rooster. I named them Chantecler and Michelle. They are wonderful! Just as sweet and tame as can be, nothing like those from my childhood. These two are loose in the yard (they do have a coop for sleeping) and they hang out on the back porch. I swear they want IN the house. They hang out with "Silky" our African Desert Tortoise (dont ask!) on the porch. Who were ever believe this???!!! I'll be updating as the babies grow.

Thats wonderful!! Sounds really cute, the chickens and your tortoise! Need to take some pics!! So glad you decided to join us here! As you're finding out, you learn a lot, and have fun also.

Hello and welcome! Would you mind telling me what hatchery you ordered your chicks from? I've only found two so far that work with small orders. Thanks!

You are going to love BYC!

I know what you mean about the chickens wanting in the house. Sometimes mne come to the front door and peck, it sounds just like they are knocking to come in

Thank you all for the warm welcome!! Wow, you guys are awsome! I will post some pics of the tortoise and chickens as soon as I figure out how to post them. It's pretty amazing! Also, others have been asking about how I have only 5 chicks. Our neighbor bought 20 of the 25 that we bought together from McMurray. Our neighbors are really cool. So far my five are doing really well. They are so cite!!
