I've been lurking here for awhile and decided to take the plunge.
I'm just starting my second year with my own flock. Started last April w/ 6 Rhode Island Reds; Tyler and his ladies. Tyler was so beautiful. He tasted good too. Mr. chicken had to go when he jumped the fence and corned my six year old.
This spring we came home from the farm store with 2 leghorns and 4 brown-white chicks I have not figured out yet. That makes 11 happy girls who day range my yard, the neighbors' yards and the woods. We also have three dogs, three cats and honey bees. We live in a country sub-division or I'd have a cow too.
I work for the Postal Service, where I handle the Live animals. I love giving people what is clearly their first box of baby chicks. I wanted my own chickens as soon as I saw my first box of peepers and the ducklings are so cute it hurts. I take pride in getting my little charges safely on their way.
DH build my coop out of our garden shed. We average 4 brown eggs a day right now. I think the new girls will lay white eggs. I hope to get some easter eggs next. Thanks for reading this!!

from Alaska! Even up here in the frozen north the chickens thrive. We've got 6 laying EE, only shades of green. Then we have a variety of white and brown layers and 75 new chicks to supplement the hen house.
