Hi, all!
We (finally) got around to getting chickens. Been talking about it since we got married 13 years ago, but it seems like this is a good year to become a bit more self sufficient. My hubby and I (no kids) own 5 acres in Michigan have a 2000ft2 veggie garden + another 1000ft2 of herb/berry garden and small orchard we established over the years, We lost our beehives over winter and didn't order new this year, so we are also beekeepers ...without bees. We have 3 dogs (GSD mixes and a shorthair pointer) and several in/out cats. Since I'm not too worried about the fish being hazardous to the chickens, they probably aren't important. ;-)
My grandparents had chickens when I was little and I absolutely hated getting eggs because I always got hen-pecked while Gramma razzed me about being a wimp. I wasn't a big fan of helping Grandpa butcher the chickens either, tbh. Thats a few reasons we never got chickens as adults, not to mention every creature you are responsible for means a little less freedom to travel. But now, my DH and I are still working from home for the foreseeable future so its as good a time as ever to get birds.
Besides a few things I picked up from my grandparents as a kid, I am pretty much brand new to chickens, which is why I am here. Plus I plan to haunt the building a coop page for the next month while we try to cobble together a decent coop for the 15 pullets and 1 cock we have coming in a month.
Looking forward to getting to know you all!
