I have a foam ice chest that I have made into an incubator. Just unsure as to where the vent holes should go - at the top? At the bottom? Both? When do you open the holes and when do they stay closed?

Also, I have a hot water heater thermostat, but there is a ten degree variation from when it comes on to when it shuts off. If I have it shut off at 101 degrees, it won't come back on until it dips down to 91 degrees. Is that OK?

but the holes are in the top and bottom. Small holes in the bottom. The top has small and larger holes - one of the large holes has the fan attached to it. The other has a vent plug. Using the vent plug is kind of a personal trial and error type thing. In the past I never used the plug, but have recently found out if I use the plug during lockdown, my humidity stays steadier.

As for the temp difference - I think 10 degrees is too much but have never built an incubator before. How often does it cycle?
