Welcome to BYC!!I combined questions 1-3 with a brief intro.
I'm brand new to chickens.
I bought some hatching eggs from a local farmer and incubated 35 in early March. I had 7 duds, and 2 quitters if I remember correctly. I just finished sending all but one roo to Freezer Camp. It's like summer camp for kids, except they don't need no steenkin' bedrolls or backpacks. And they don't usually come back next summer. Ours is called Camp Cocka-doo-dle-DONE and the Campus is in my kitchen.
They are just a Farm Mix and fly like pheasants.
I have one Rooster, 7 hens, and since Madame Hairy-ette went all bloody and stuff, I seem to also have one chick. (so far) My 2nd oldest grandson named her for her goofball appearance, and her chick, Peaches because....well.... he likes peaches.
Duh.
Their breed is unknown, but I think I want to start a flock of American Bresse next time around... for their dual purpose nature.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I just know enough to be dangerous. But I'm enjoying learning. I pretend to know stuff already, but that's just RONG.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Grandpa-ing.
Naps.
Trombone.
Naps.
Shooting and reloading.
Did I mention Naps?
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I have a wife of 44 years, who doubles as my barber and parole officer, 3 grown children, and 5 Grandkids that are all smarter than yours, ages 8, 5, 2, 1, and 1. All out of the same brooder house: my oldest son and his wife.
Youngun #3--the two year-old--is the only girl and I feel sorry for her unsuspecting brothers. They are hopelessly out gunned. And she unfortunately looks like she is going to be beautiful, so she'll prolly get by with stuff in school, and that's NO BUENO. I'm a former Band Teacher.
I print shirts for my 'job' (rolleyes here) which was, in fact, my ACTUAL vocation for a decade and a half.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
Internet search.
'Bout 39.6 minutes.
I need this place cuz I don't know what I'm doin'. But I sure like chickens.
The end.
Hello, and welcome to BYC. Thanks for a great introduction. Your Mr Hobbs looks like Miss Maggie Mae who owned me for an entirely too short period of time.
