Newbie Intro

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
Thank you! I think I'd heard this somewhere before. Kind of a bummer. I've also heard of "chicken math," so I'll be cognizant of this. I have a shoulder injury I'm still working through, otherwise I'd definitely build. But thinking this should get us started this spring and maybe I'll build one once I'm in better shape. Thank you very much!
Have you considered modifying a shed into a coop instead of buying a prefab?

May I suggest (when you feel better) that you convert a shed. It is relatively easy. You just have to make a hardware cloth apron for the coop, roosting bars, and increase ventilation

Hello! Discovered BYC when I was looking for coop plans. I was going to try to build a coop and started pricing out lumber for a Wichita, then realized it might be a bit too much for me and decided to get an Eglu up next month. Just got most of the things I need for a brooder. I’m gonna try to get it set up today and then will just need chicks and pine shavings. Hoping to learn a lot more from all of you!

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? Never had chickens. I’m 40 and this will be my first time.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now? None yet. Probably going to get four chicks in the next couple weeks.

(3) What breeds do you have? None yet, but thinking of Plymouth/Barred Rocks, Easter Eggers, RI Reds, Buff Orpingtons, Sussexes, and Hamburgs.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? I’m hoping to cut down on kitchen waste and garden/yard waste by feeding it to our future chickens and get the help for the composter. And everyone in the house loves eggs. Also looking for great pets for the kids.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies? Woodworking, seeing, homebrewing, and graphic design

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. SAHM running a restaurant with my chef husband living in Massachusetts with our three small children, my husband’s parents, and our German shepherd.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D I found it looking for coop plans!
Welcome to BYC!

There's a ton of information here, but you probably already realized that.

I came here looking for coop information, too. I was going to buy one, or build one from pallets, but finally chose a hoop coop design as I'm in my 60s, arthritic, and not very handy. I did one almost all by myself in just over a month of weekends and occasionally after I got home from work.

Here's a bunch of threads on hoop coops: https://www.backyardchickens.com/se...st&c[child_nodes]=1&c[nodes][0]=9&o=relevance
