Newbie intro

Hi Everyone!
I'm a somewhat newbie chicken owner. I have one Rhode Island Red, one Barred Rock, and five white Leghorns......I have some more brown layer chicks coming in August

My first batch though is almost three months old. I have a pretty big backyard, as far as city backyards nowadays go and I have two Beagles (who are fine with the chickens!). I love gardening, knitting, and quilting. I'm a wife and a mom to two teenage boys. I also work part time as a teacher to alternative ed students. Anyway, I just learning as I go with the chickens! My husband is currently building our "grand coop" (he's into woodworking thankfully) and it has water, electricity, etc. I'll post some pics if I can figure out how to do it. Right now our "coop" is on our patio. I let the chickens out during the day but I'm trying to figure out how to keep them out in the yard and not pooping on the patio but also let our Beagles in and out. Any suggestions?

Have your husband include an attached run with that coop. Lots of ideas on this site. Keep a serious eye on your pups. Even the best behaved dogs get enticed by the temptation of walking treats.
