Newbie introducing myself!!!

Hi everyone!!!!

I am brand new to the world of backyard chickens! I brought my first flock home over the weekend on Saturday. 6 RI Red/White rock hybrids. They are 24 weeks old. I purchased them from a farm nearby where I live in Connecticut. They seem to enjoy their run/coop and I've had no issues thus far!!!! Well, except that I am anxiously awaiting my first egg!!! I had to buy eggs yesterday at the supermarket and it near killed me!

I think I answered the first three template questions above. I'll answer the remaining questions below.



(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com? - Every time I have a question I type it into my browser and the answer has always been on this site! So I decided to join! The first night they were home it was sunset and they would not go into their coop. I was freaking out and googled what I should do. I found this question posted in these forums and there were suggestions to put a light in the coop. I placed a lantern inside and one by one, my hens went into the coop. THANK YOU!!!!

(5) What are some of your other hobbies? Novice guitar player, photography, baking

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. We have two dogs - a shih tzu who loves watching the new hens. A bulldog who I wants to chase the new hens (we are keeping her away from them and training her not to chase at them). We also have two gerbils. I have a husband (who wants nothing to do with the hens but is quickly warming up to them) and two children who are ecstatic about our new girls!!!

Michelle, very glad you joined the BYC flock.

I would still keep an eye on the bulldog, she is strong enough to get through any of your fencing, and has the desire to do so/. You said she likes to chase the chickens. If they are feeling stressed this can put them off laying until they feel safe again. Everything loves (to eat) chickens, so they are very easily frightened.

Drumstick Diva - I absolutely agree! We are watching her VERY closely. We are not letting her leave the house unsupervised. And when I do let her out I keep her away from the hens. Completely out of sight of one another. I am trying to keep my girls as "stress free" and safe as I can!!!!

Hello! I'm a newbie. I've been on this site about a month and just created an account. On Easter weekend we bought two Rouen ducklings from TSC. I brooded them 6 weeks inside. Now they are outside in a coop we built and I have two more females about 3 weeks old. I love them all!

My biggest obstacle now is figuring out a better pond situation for them. I'm temporarily using a kiddie pool and we all know it takes about 30 mins for them to muck it up!

I'm happy to be here and look forward to sharing everybody's joys and learning too!
